Pennsylvania--Hotel Shikellimy
Description
A photograph of the men of the State Millers' Association on the steps of Hotel Shikellimy in 1893.
The agriculture industry was hit hard by economic depression; wheat farmers were hurt especially because of competition with dairy, poultry, and livestock farmers. In response to these poor conditions, the Pennsylvania State Millers' Association was created in 1877.
The Pennsylvania State Millers' Association discussed economics and the state of Pennsylvania agriculture, the most profitable wheat to grind, overflowing granaries, and cheap bread for everyday citizens.
