W. E. Custer Mill, also known as Custer's Mill, operated in Milton during the early 1900's. In addition to flour, the mill produced a scratch feed (for chickens) made of wheat, buckwheat, cracked corn, oats, and sunflower seeds.
This railroad lantern was used by JoAnn Bender's grandfather when he would shovel coal into train engines. He worked for the railroad after returning home from his service as a medic in World War I.
Raised lettering on the lantern reads "P. & R. RY. Co." The Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Company (P. & R. RY. Co.) began passenger service from Philadelphia to Milton in 1854. Additional lines were later added from Milton to Williamsport (1871) and from West Milton to Shamokin (1883).
